A perennial turmeric plant from the ginger family can reach a height of up to one meter. On an industrial scale, it is grown today in Japan and China, India and Indonesia. Turmeric is considered the most popular seasoning in these parts.
For the preparation of spices, only the rhizome of Indian saffron (the second name of the plant) is used, but the plant itself is quite decorative. Small flowers are combined into large (up to 20 cm in length) inflorescences and boast very beautiful bracts. One turmeric bush (long leaves grow directly from the soil) may have several such inflorescences. Moreover, the flowering of turmeric is very long – up to three months.
